Specialist High Skills Major

Student Success is about meeting the individual learning needs of each and every student. Schools are providing students with more opportunities to customize their high school experience and build on their strengths and interests through a variety of new and enhanced learning options. One of those options is the Specialist High Skills Major Program (SHSM). Student learning skills at a dental office

This program allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting their diploma requirements. It enables students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in career-related learning environments and helps them focus on graduation and on pursuing their post-secondary goals.

Each SHSM involves:

  • A series of bundled credits, designed to help students prepare for a career in a specific economic sector.

  • Sector-recognized certifications and training courses (like WHMIS, First Aid and CPR etc.).

  • Experiential learning opportunities (co-op).

  • "Reach Ahead" experiences connected with the student's selected post-secondary pathway.

  • Developing essential skills and work habits required by employers.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School currently offers SHSM programs in:

  • Hospitality and Tourism

  • Construction

  • Health and Wellness

Further information on SHSM programs are found in the course calendar, or by calling the school's Student Services department 548-8282.
